Grandmother’s Greenhouse supports innovative native seed deployment methods that expand the scale and efficiency of land restoration efforts across Northeast British Columbia. Through strategic partnerships, we help integrate gel-encapsulated native seed technology into restoration projects, providing an effective solution for establishing native vegetation across large or difficult-to-access landscapes.
Gel-encapsulation technology protects high-value native seeds from environmental stressors such as predation, desiccation, and temperature fluctuations. By surrounding each seed with a protective gel matrix, this method improves seed survival and increases the likelihood of successful germination and early establishment, particularly in the challenging conditions common to northern climates.
Encapsulated seed blends typically include locally adapted native species combined with regionally derived beneficial microbes. These microbes help support early root development, improve soil interactions, and enhance overall plant establishment during the critical early stages of growth. This approach allows restoration practitioners to introduce plant communities that are better equipped to establish in degraded soils and harsh environmental conditions.
The gel capsules are designed for aerial application and can be distributed using drone-based technology or other aerial delivery systems. This allows thousands of capsules to be efficiently deployed across large landscapes, steep terrain, or remote locations that would otherwise be difficult to access using traditional planting methods.
These capsules can also be applied during the winter months, allowing them to remain dormant until spring conditions provide the moisture needed to dissolve the gel matrix. Once activated by moisture, the protective coating breaks down, enabling seeds to germinate and establish on prepared restoration sites.
Through this partnership-based model, Grandmother’s Greenhouse helps connect restoration practitioners with scalable, innovative seed delivery systems that support efficient, landscape-level ecological restoration.
