Black cottonwood and white spruce characterize this wet forest type throughout its development, from young to mature stands.
The trees in cottonwood floodplains can range from well-spaced to close together with a dense layer of shrubs and a few herbs covering the ground.
The most common shrubs are red-osier dogwood and mountain alder.
Cottonwood floodplains are found in the flat edges and flood plains of larger watercourses, like the Peace River.
